Thematic Workshop Copenhagen

On the 9th and 10th of November 2009, the Danish Design Centre hosted the second SEE project workshop in Copenhagen. Our Danish partner organised a very eventful programme around the theme of Bridging Design, Sustainability and Innovation in Regional Policy.
SEE partners from all eleven partner organisations attended the event and many were accompanied by regional government representatives, which made for lively debate. By inviting policy-makers the ideas and policy proposals generated as part of the workshop session were more aligned with real policy priorities.
The second Steering Committee meeting was held first thing on Monday, where each partner presented two recent achievements and set one goal to achieve by the next project meeting. In the afternoon, we had a lively series of presentations on the theme, the key elements of which were captured in the illustrative summary by Bigger Picture. The first day was concluded with the SEE Network Summit, at which the
SEE Policy Booklet (an output of the previous thematic workshop held in Lyon in June 2009) was launched.
On the second day, the SEE partners presented their favourite example of sustainable design thinking. A prize for the best example, as voted by the partners, was awarded to Justin Knecht, our Irish partner, who received a ‘share book’ on ‘green design’. The idea behind the prize is to browse the book, get inspiration and then pass the book on as a gift in order for the book to travel around the world disseminating sustainable design. Justin presented an example of behaviour change and the application of design thinking to achieve sustainability targets. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District provides an ‘Energy Comparison’ on electricity bills so neighbours can gauge how sustainable they are compared with the rest of their community in order to encourage lower consumption.
The workshop continued with the facilitated session on Bridging Design, Sustainability and Innovation in Regional Policy. This entailed a very structured process, which began with a brainstorming session on our ultimate objectives, followed by a mapping exercise identifying the players, programmes and policies relating to sustainability and innovation in the partner regions. Using the information gathered as part of the mapping exercise, the partners and policy-makers were divided into five groups, in which the initial policy ideas were refined into practical policy proposals through a process involving consultation and dialogue between the design partners and policy-makers.
